(socialON) Conference discusses implementation of the EU General Data Protection Regulation. Companies are required to implement new privacy rules in their business practices. Debate on data transfers to the USA is another issue. Bitkom Privacy Conference on 22 September 2016 in Berlin.

Privacy has become a major social issue in recent years. Data Protection is a basic human right that needs to be upheld. At the same time, though, the digital world has seen a steady rise in new applications and business models that are based on intelligent data processing. And while this is happening,  the new data protection rules deciding whether these innovative digital services can or cannot be put into practice are wielded on a national and European level. „At the moment there are two issues that are particularly challenging for companies: implementation of the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the debate surrounding the legality of data transfers to third countries outside of the European Union“, says Susanne Dehmel, Head of Data Protection and Security at Bitkom. Bitkom’s international privacy conference will find answers to the most pressing questions: Which changes will the reform of the General Data Protection Regulation bring, and what are the national legislators planning? Does the Privacy Shield create a uniform data privacy standard between the EU and the USA? And which are the most urgent issues that companies and other organisations must address?

The Privacy Conference unites the worlds of business, science and politics to discuss solutions to these challenges. Over 150 participants and more than 30 internationally acclaimed speakers will gather at the Kalkscheune in Berlin-Mitte on 22 September 2016. The keynote speakers will include Peter Fleischer, Global Privacy Counsel at Google, Dr Jyn Schultze-Melling, Director for Privacy Policy Europe at Facebook, Paul Nemitz, Director Fundamental Rights and Union Citizenship at the European Commission, Ted Dean, U.S. Department of Commerce and  International Trade Administration, and Dr Claus-Dieter Ulmer, Global Data Privacy Officer at Deutsche Telekom.
